According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA), “Household leaks can waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water annually nationwide”. In an effort to further water conservation, each spring the EPA promotes “Fix a Leak Week”, an educational campaign focused on raising awareness on water loss due to undetected household leaks and promoting water conservation in the home. This year, Fix a Leak Week will be March 15 – 21, 2021.

March 15-21, 2021 Fix a Leak Week

The Numbers:

  • 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons, or more, per day
  • A leaky faucet dripping at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year
  • Minor water leaks account for nearly 1 trillion gallons of wasted water each year
    • This amount equals the annual household water used by nearly 11 million homes
  • A shower leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year

Suggestions for Conservation:

  • Repair leaks by checking faucet washers and gaskets for wear, and replacing them if necessary
  • Replace older and aging toilets with WaterSense models to potentially save 13,000 gallons of water annually for the average family’s level of use
  • Repair or replace leaky faucets and/or toilets to save an average of 10% on water bills
  • Attend a live or virtual workshop to learn more about repairing leaks and saving water

WaterSense is a voluntary partnership program sponsored by the EPA. This label helps identify water-efficient products as well as resources for water conservation. For more information and education focused on water conservation, visit their website at https://www.epa.gov/watersense
